Denmark: Social Democrats lose, and what it means
Labour's Asylum Plan: Desperate or Just Plain Dumb?
Alright, let's get this straight. Labour's new asylum plan, inspired by Denmark? Are they serious? I mean, seriously? It's like they looked at the dumpster fire that is Danish immigration policy and said, "Yeah, let's import that!"
The "Danish Model": A Cautionary Tale
So, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood calls these plans "the most sweeping asylum reforms in modern times." Right. Sweeping alright, sweeping human rights under the rug. Starmer says it's about "social confidence." What about actual human decency?
They're talking about "core protection" status – 30-month renewable leaves with zero prospect of permanent settlement for twenty years. Twenty years! That's a lifetime in limbo. Automatic family reunion? Gone. Benefits? Harder to access. Appeals? "Faster," which probably means "less fair."
And the kicker? Restarting enforced returns to Syria. Syria! Are they completely detached from reality? It's like sending someone back into a war zone and calling it "compassionate."
Stella Creasy gets it. She calls it "performatively cruel" and economically stupid. Can't stabilize your status, can't get a job, can't get a bank account. Brilliant plan, guys. Way to create a dependent underclass.
Then there's the "olive branch" – capped expansion of "safe and legal" routes. Community sponsorship, refugee students, refugee skilled workers. Oh, how generous. It's like offering a band-aid after amputating a limb.
Denmark's Disaster: A Lesson Unlearned?
Labour's looking at Denmark because they're supposedly "tough on immigration." But has it worked? Not really. The far right is still climbing in popularity there, demanding even more extreme measures like "remigration" – mass deportation. So much for "solving" immigration, huh?

And let's not forget the legal hurdles. Denmark is an ECHR signatory, just like the UK. Their own legal system has blocked some of the most insane measures. Hundreds of Syrian refugees had their permits revoked, but the courts stopped them from being deported. So, the policy is mostly for show. A scare tactic.
But hey, maybe that's the point. "The rhetoric in Denmark has had a big impact," some Nordic correspondent told The Guardian. "Even when policies can’t be fully implemented, they create huge uncertainty and vulnerability." Translation: We'll make life so miserable for asylum seekers that they'll just go away. Classy.
And offcourse, the Social Democrats in Denmark just got hammered in municipal elections, losing control of Copenhagen for the first time in over a century. Voters are turning to left-wing and green parties. Maybe, just maybe, people are waking up to the fact that cruelty isn't a winning political strategy. As reported by Social Democrats in Denmark suffer sweeping election losses, the shift away from the Social Democrats could signal a change in public sentiment.
But Alex Norris on BBC Breakfast assures us that "political considerations don't come into this." Yeah, right. And I'm the Queen of England.
Here's the thing: Denmark is a tiny country with a coalition-based political system. The UK is...not. Replicating their system here is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. It just ain't gonna work.
The Real Question
Why are we even having this conversation? Why are we bending over backwards to appease the far right? Why are we sacrificing human dignity on the altar of "social confidence"? Are we really that afraid? Or are we just that heartless?
Then again, maybe I'm missing something. Maybe there's some grand strategic genius at play here. Maybe Labour knows exactly what they're doing, and I'm just too cynical to see it. Nah, who am I kidding?
This is Peak Political Cowardice
